Forth, South Lanarkshire
Forth is a village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland with a population of around 3,500 people. It is situated near Lanark, and stands 1,000 feet (320 metres) above sea level. History The town of Forth is thought to take its name from the meaning "the open air". The town itself is first mentioned in a great seal charter of 1599. The first jobs available in the town of Forth were thought to be handloom weavers who, after an increase in the towns capacity to 170, were replaced by different trades such as ironstone, limestone and coalminers. The latter trades contribute to why it is known as a mining village. Amongst the historic buildings in the village, Forth Parish Church was built in 1875 and the stone used was quarried directly from nearby Hailstonegreen. The first Police Station in Forth was opened in 1886 and is now home to the local Health Clinic. Forth (programming Language)
Forth is a procedural, stack-oriented programming language and interactive environment designed by Charles H. "Chuck" Moore and first used by other programmers in 1970. Although not an acronym, the language's name in its early years was often spelled in all capital letters as ''FORTH''. The FORTH-79 and FORTH-83 implementations, which were not written by Moore, became de facto standards, and an official standardization of the language was published in 1994 as ANS Forth. A wide range of Forth derivatives existed before and after ANS Forth. Forth typically combines a compiler with an integrated command shell, where the user interacts via subroutines called ''words''. Words can be defined, tested, redefined, and debugged without recompiling or restarting the whole program. All syntactic elements, including variables and basic operators, are defined as words. Forth (Edinburgh Ward)
Forth is one of the seventeen wards used to elect members of the City of Edinburgh Council. Established in 2007 along with the other wards, it currently elects four Councillors. Its territory covers communities in the north of the city between Ferry Road and the coast on the Firth of Forth, including Granton, Newhaven, Pilton, Trinity, Victoria Park and Wardie, some of which historically fell within the boundaries of Leith. A 2017 boundary change caused the loss of the Muirhouse neighbourhood, but housebuilding elsewhere (including various projects in Granton) meant the overall population increased slightly. In 2019, the ward had a population of 31,823. Forth () ( Yola: ''Forthe'', or ''Vorth'') is a barony in County Wexford in Ireland. Forth is bordered by Wexford Harbour to the north, St George's Channel to the east, the Celtic Sea to the south, and the baronies of Bargy to the west and Shelmaliere East to the northwest. Settlements in the barony include Wexford, Rosslare, Kilrane, Broadway, Ballycogly, Killinick, and Tagoat. Other features include Lady's Island Lake and Carnsore Point. The Fotharta from whom the barony was named were a sept allied to the Uí Bairrche who ruled the Wexford region until the 8th century, when the Uí Ceinnselaig pushed them back to the southernmost part: the Fotharta to Forth and the Uí Bairrche to neighbouring Bargy. Forth () is a barony in County Carlow, Republic of Ireland. Etymology Forth takes its name from the Irish '' Fortuatha'', a term that described a region ( tuath) not ruled by members of the dominant dynasty of a province. In this case, the region was known as ''Fothairt Mag Feá'', "the ''fothairt'' of the plain of beeches." Location Forth is found in the eastern part of County Carlow. River Forth (Tasmania)
The River Forth is a perennial river located in northwest Tasmania, Australia. Location and features The lower part of the river features Lake Barrington, which is a major venue for competitive rowing. It is also the location of the village of Forth. The river is a part of the Mersey-Forth power project, which includes seven hydroelectric power stations. Three hydroelectric power stations have been built on the Forth River itself, including Cethana Power Station (impounding Lake Cethana); Devils Gate Power Station (impounding Lake Barrington); and Paloona Power Station (impounding Lake Paloona.) The upper part of the river catchment area is also known as the Forth River High Country and contains the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park with the source of the river being on the southern slopes of Mount Pelion West. River Forth
The River Forth is a major river in central Scotland, long, which drains into the North Sea on the east coast of the country. Its drainage basin covers much of Stirlingshire in Scotland's Central Belt. The Gaelic name for the upper reach of the river, above Stirling, is ''Abhainn Dubh'', meaning "black river". The name for the river below the tidal reach (just past where it is crossed by the M9 motorway) is ''Uisge For''.
