Flag Of The Northern Mariana Islands
The flag of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands was adopted in July 1985, by the Second Northern Marianas Constitution. The NMI flag was originally designed by Taga during the year 1985. Later during that year, they finalized the draft of the flag in the last CNMI constitutional convention. This was the most symbolic moment of the annexation of the CNMI. The flag consists of three symbols: a star representing the United States, a latte stone representing the Chamorros, and a ''mwarmwar'' (decorative wreath) representing the Carolinians; the blue background represents the Pacific Ocean and the Mariana Trench. The Seal of Northern Mariana Islands takes its inspiration from the United Nations, as the NMI had once been a UN Trust Territory. Design The seal consists of a blue field superimposed with a white star and a latte stone, a Chamorro house foundation. The flag of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands ( TTPI) consisted of a light blue field that contained six white stars centered in a circle pattern. The stars symbolized the six districts of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands: the Marianas, the Marshall Islands, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei (including Kosrae), and Palau. The blue field symbolized freedom and loyalty. The flag was the end product of a contest that was won by Gonzalo Santos, a government employee who lived in the Yap district. For his efforts, he won US$250. The Santos design was approved by the Council of Micronesia (an unofficial body) on October 3, 1962, and was first used on October 24. The flag was reapproved by the TTPI High Commissioner and the Congress of Micronesia in July 1965. The flag became official on August 19, 1965. The Mariana Trench is an oceanic trench located in the western Pacific Ocean, about east of the Mariana Islands; it is the deepest oceanic trench on Earth.
