Darkthrone
Darkthrone is a Norwegian extreme metal band from Kolbotn, Akershus. Formed in 1986 as a death metal band named Black Death, in 1991 Darkthrone embraced a black metal style influenced by Bathory and Celtic Frost and became one of the leading bands in the Norwegian black metal scene. Their first three black metal albums—'' A Blaze in the Northern Sky'' (1992), '' Under a Funeral Moon'' (1993) and '' Transilvanian Hunger'' (1994)—are sometimes dubbed the "Unholy Trinity". They are considered the peak of the band's career and to be among the most influential albums in black metal. Darkthrone has been a duo of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto since guitarist Zephyrous left the band in 1993. They have sought to remain outside the music mainstream. A Blaze In The Northern Sky
''A Blaze in the Northern Sky'' is the second studio album by Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone. It was recorded at Creative Studios in August 1991 and released on 26 February 1992 by Peaceville Records. It contained the band's first black metal recordings and is considered a classic within the genre. It was the first album of what fans dub the "Unholy Trinity", the other albums being '' Under a Funeral Moon'' and '' Transilvanian Hunger''. It was the last album to feature bassist Dag Nilsen. Background Darkthrone's first album, 1991's '' Soulside Journey'', was a Swedish-styled death metal release. Early Norwegian Black Metal Scene
The early Norwegian black metal scene of the 1990s is credited with creating the modern black metal genre and produced some of the most acclaimed and influential artists in extreme metal. It attracted massive media attention when it was revealed that its members had been responsible for two murders, a suicide, and a wave of church burnings in Norway. The scene had an ethos and the core members referred to themselves as "The Black Circle" or "Black Metal Inner Circle". It consisted primarily of young men, many of whom gathered at the record shop Helvete ("Hell") in Oslo. In interviews, they voiced extreme anti-Christian and misanthropic views, presenting themselves as a cult-like group of militant Satanists who wanted to spread terror, hatred and evil. They adopted pseudonyms and appeared in photographs wearing "corpse paint" and wielding medieval weaponry. Isengard (Norwegian Band)
Isengard is a solo project of Fenriz, the drummer of Darkthrone, created in 1989. It is rooted on Norwegian black/Viking metal and experimental rock on some tracks, and named after the large fortress Isengard in J. R. R. Tolkien's ''The Lord of the Rings'' book series. History The person/creature in Isengard's logo was taken from an old ''Lord of the Rings'' RPG called Middle-earth Role Playing. The original illustration represents Thuringwethil, the vampire from Tolkien's book ''The Silmarillion''. Fenriz created Isengard because he had many musical ideas that did not fit in with the style and music of Darkthrone. Fenriz performed all instruments and vocals himself. Neptune Towers
Neptune Towers was a dark ambient side project formed in 1993 by Fenriz of Darkthrone. He released two albums under this name, '' Caravans to Empire Algol'' (1994) and ''Transmissions from Empire Algol'' (1995), both issued by Moonfog Productions. Fenriz began recording a third Neptune Towers album, ''Space Lab'', in 1994, but it was not finished. Both albums were reissued by Peaceville Records in 2012, with excerpts from ''Space Lab'' appended to ''Transmissions from Empire Algol''. Storm (Norwegian Band)
Storm was a Norwegian viking metal band that originally included Fenriz of Darkthrone and Satyr of Satyricon. Later on, Kari Rueslåtten, formerly of the band The 3rd and the Mortal, also joined them on vocals. The project only released one album, titled ''Nordavind'', released in 1995, which makes them among the first viking and folk metal bands. History Split After the recording of the one and only album, Kari Rueslåtten stated in the Norwegian music newspaper ''Puls'' that she would join the band if there were no extreme lyrics in the songs. Dødheimsgard
Dødheimsgard (also known as DHG) is a Norwegian extreme metal band formed in 1994. Dødheimsgard originally played black metal, but 1999's '' 666 International'' saw them change their style into experimental and avant-garde/industrial metal. In 2000, they shortened their name to DHG. Their name,"Dødheimsgard" is a contraction of three words: ''Død'' which means 'death', ''heim'' which means 'home' and ''gard'' which means (at least in this context) 'realm'. Nocturno Culto
Ted Skjellum (born 4 March 1972), also known by the stage name Nocturno Culto, is a Norwegian musician best known as the vocalist, lead guitarist, and partial bassist (shared with Fenriz) of the influential black metal band Darkthrone. He has been with the band since 1988. He is also the vocalist of the band Sarke, and has a solo project called Gift of Gods. He currently works in Norway as a school teacher, and has a son and a daughter. He has also released a documentary film called ''The Misanthrope'' in which he deals with black metal music and life in Norway.
