Durant () is a city in Bryan County, Oklahoma, United States that serves as the headquarters of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. The population was 18,589 in the 2020 census. Durant is the principal city of the Durant Micropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 46,067 in 2020. The city is the largest in the Choctaw Nation, ranking ahead of McAlester and Poteau. Durant is also part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Combined Statistical Area, anchoring the northern edge. The city was founded by Dixon Durant, a Choctaw who lived in the area,Phipps p. 180 after the MK&T railroad came through the Indian Territory in the early 1870s. It became the county seat of Bryan County in 1907 after Oklahoma statehood. Durant is home to Southeastern Oklahoma State University and the headquarters of the Choctaw Nation. Durant Motors Inc. was established in 1921 by former General Motors CEO William "Billy" Durant following his termination by the GM board of directors and the New York bankers who financed GM. Corporate relationships Durant Motors attempted to be a full-line automobile producer of cars and fielded the Flint, Durant, and Star brands, which were designed to meet Buick, Oldsmobile, Oakland, and Chevrolet price points. Durant ISD takes some students in from places such as Calera, Armstrong, Mead, Silo, Caddo, and Atoka. In terms of enrollment, Durant ISD is the largest public school district in Southeastern Oklahoma. History Constructed in 1919, the former home of Durant Middle School originally served as the Durant high school and housed students grades 6 through 12. Durant, Mississippi
Durant is a city near the central eastern border of Holmes County, Mississippi, United States, and Big Black River. The town was founded in 1858 as a station on the Mississippi Central Railroad, later part of the Illinois Central. Durant was named for Louis Durant, a Choctaw chief who had lived on this site before the United States undertook Indian Removal in the 1830s, forcing him and most of the Choctaw to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River. The population of the rural city was 2,673 at the 2010 census, down from 2,932 at the 2000 census. About 3 miles away is the Castalian Springs Hotel, believed in 2020 to be the only surviving such spa structure in the state. Effective July 1, 2018 the Durant school district and the Holmes County School District consolidated into the Holmes County Consolidated School District. the superintendent was Edwin Robinson. It operated a single school, Durant Public School, with elementary and secondary divisions. History Gray Tollison, chairperson of the Mississippi Senate Education Committee, wrote SB 2494, which required Durant school district to consolidate into Holmes County's district; Tollison argued that the Durant district had insufficient tax revenues to operate.
