Douglas Mental Health University Institute
The Douglas Mental Health University Institute (french: Institut universitaire en santé mentale Douglas; formerly the Douglas Hospital and originally the Protestant Hospital for the Insane) is a Canadian psychiatric hospital located in the borough of Verdun in the city of Montreal, Quebec. It is also a teaching hospital affiliated with McGill University. History Founded on July 19, 1881, by Alfred Perry and a group of Protestant clergy and Montreal citizens, the Douglas Institute was originally named the "Protestant Hospital for the Insane." At the time, Montreal had another psychiatric hospital, but it was a francophone Catholic hospital, and the Douglas was meant to offer psychiatric services to the anglophone Protestant minority. The founders put an advertisement in the local newspaper to seek funds for a new building to be constructed, and local philanthropists offered generous donations. Allan Memorial Institute
The Allan Memorial Institute (AMI; french: Institut Allan Memorial), also known colloquially as "The Allan", is a former psychiatric hospital and research institute located at 1025 Pine Avenue West in Montreal, Quebec. It is situated on the slope of Mount Royal on the McGill University downtown campus in what was the Golden Square Mile of Montreal. It is named in memory of Sir Hugh Allan, whose former mansion, '' Ravenscrag'', it occupies. Michael J. Meaney, CM, CQ, FRSC, (born 1951) is a professor at McGill University specializing in biological psychiatry, neurology, and neurosurgery, who is primarily known for his research on stress, maternal care, and gene expression. Rémi Quirion, (born January 9, 1955) is a Canadian scientist. He is the first Chief Scientist of Quebec. Born in Lac-Drolet, Quebec, Quirion received a Ph.D. from Université de Sherbrooke in 1980. Heinz Edgar Lehmann (July 17, 1911 – April 7, 1999) was a German-born Canadian psychiatrist best known for his use of chlorpromazine for the treatment of schizophrenia in 1950s and "truly the father of modern psychopharmacology." Early life Born in Berlin, Germany, he was educated at the University of Freiburg, the University of Marburg, the University of Vienna, and the University of Berlin. He emigrated to Canada in 1937.
