Death From Above 1979
Death from Above 1979 (also known as Death from Above) is a Canadian rock duo consisting of bassist Jesse F. Keeler and drummer and vocalist Sebastien Grainger from Toronto, Ontario, formed in 2001. The band released their debut album, '' You're a Woman, I'm a Machine'', in 2004 and broke up in 2006. They reformed in 2011 and released their second album, '' The Physical World'', in 2014. Since then the band has released 2 more albums, '' Outrage! Is Now'' in 2017 and '' Is 4 Lovers'' in 2021. History Formation and ''Heads Up'' (2001–2003) Grainger and Keeler reportedly met at a Sonic Youth concert, though they sometimes jokingly claimed to have met in prison, on a pirate ship, or in a gay bar, leading some journalists and fans to believe these stories. Hardcore Punk
Hardcore punk (also known as simply hardcore) is a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s. It is generally faster, harder, and more aggressive than other forms of punk rock. Its roots can be traced to earlier punk scenes in San Francisco and Southern California which arose as a reaction against the still predominant hippie cultural climate of the time. It was also inspired by Washington D.C. and New York punk rock and early proto-punk. James Murphy (electronic Musician)
James Jeremiah Murphy (born February 4, 1970) is an American musician, DJ, singer, songwriter, and record producer. His most well-known musical project is LCD Soundsystem, which first gained attention with its single " Losing My Edge" in 2002 before releasing its eponymous debut album in February 2005 to critical acclaim and top 20 success in the UK. LCD Soundsystem's second and third studio albums, '' Sound of Silver'' (2007) and ''This Is Happening'' (2010) respectively, were met with universal acclaim from several music review outlets. MuchMusic Video Awards
The iHeartRadio MMVAs were an annual awards show broadcast on Much to honour the year's best music videos that was last held in 2018. Originally debuting in 1990 as the Canadian Music Video Awards, the awards were renamed in 1995 to the MuchMusic Video Awards, reflecting the original (1984–2013) "MuchMusic" name of the Much channel. In 2016, the show was rebranded under the iHeartRadio banner after Much's parent company, Bell Media, reached a licensing agreement with iHeartMedia. In 2018, the show's full name was officially dropped. In 2019, six years after changing the name of MuchMusic to Much, and having reduced its music video programming to just one hour daily (''Much Retro Lunch''), the ceremony was not held, citing supposed scheduling conflicts with other events occurring in Toronto. "Black History Month" is the third single from Death from Above 1979's album ''You're a Woman, I'm a Machine''. The song was given its title by drummer and vocalist Sebastien Grainger, simply because it was written in February. It reached number 48 on the UK single chart. The song is also featured on the in-game soundtrack for Project Gotham Racing 3 for the Xbox 360. The b-side on the CD single, Luno (Bloc Party vs. Death From Above 1979) is a cover of the Bloc Party song, Luno from Bloc Party's debut album Silent Alarm. The album was produced by Al-P who would later work alongside Jesse F. Keeler in the electronic music duo MSTRKRFT. History ''You're a Woman, I'm a Machine'' was recorded from February to April 2004 at The Chemical Sound in Toronto. Additional recording was done at Studio Plateau in Montreal and the album was engineered and produced by Al-P, with the exception of the Montreal sessions which were engineered by Drew Malamud. "Romantic Rights" is the first single from Death from Above 1979's debut album ''You're a Woman, I'm a Machine''. Released in 2004, it reached number 57 on the UK Singles Chart. Prior to the band's first name change, a self-titled extended play was released on April 13, 2004, consisting of four songs. The song plays as the intro to, and throughout, the MTV show Human Giant. The song appears on the soundtrack for video games ''SSX On Tour'' and ''NBA 2K15'', the latter which was curated by music producer Pharrell Williams. The band played "Romantic Rights" on ''Late Night with Conan O'Brien'', with Grainger drumming for the first half of the performance and Late Night's Max Weinberg on the same drum set for the second. Alex Puodziukas known by his stage name Al-P, is a Canadian musician, record producer and recording engineer, best known for being part of the electronic music duo MSTRKRFT along with Jesse F. Keeler. Al-P was producer for Black Cat 13, Death from Above's album ''You're a Woman, I'm a Machine'' and The Sick Lipstick's '' Sting Sting Sting''. Prior to forming MSTRKRFT, Al-P and Keeler collaborated in the late 1990s, then lived in different cities as Al-P moved to New York and worked at the studios Sound on Sound and Chung King, and did some recording for Jay-Z and Wyclef Jean. Established in 1992, at 81 Portland Street by Murray B Mitchell artist, producer and producer engineer, Daryl Smith (often assisted by Ian Blurton), as a "no-frills" operation, focusing on a large selection of vintage (circa 1960 and 1970s) recording equipment, API mixing consoles, and professional resources necessary for a best outcome. The tube mics, live room, sound formant, and burlap baffled walls were some of the expertise. ''Heads Up'' is the first studio release by Canadian rock duo Death from Above. It was released December 15, 2002, through Ache Records. The album was produced by Al-P who would later work alongside Jesse F. Keeler in the electronic music duo MSTRKRFT. Background Allmusic states the band takes cues from bands such as Lightning Bolt, Liars, and electroclash and describes the album as "minimalist, danceable racket with enough rock sensibilities for the indie kids and enough Throbbing Gristle for the art-noise lovers." The song "Dead Womb" is notable for the intro with an electronic voice saying: "La cocaina no es buena para su salud (Translation: Cocaine is not good for your health) La cocaina is not good for you." Before the song dive bombs into a punk sounding song. Sebastien Grainger actually said the intro was an old text-to-voice program on one of his older computers that did that voice.
