William Coddington
William Coddington (c. 1601 – 1 November 1678) was an early magistrate of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and later of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. He served as the judge of Portsmouth and Newport, governor of Portsmouth and Newport, deputy governor of the four-town colony, and then governor of the entire colony. Coddington was born and raised in Lincolnshire, England. He accompanied the Winthrop Fleet on its voyage to New England in 1630, becoming an early leader in Boston. There he built the first brick house and became heavily involved in the local government as an assistant magistrate, treasurer, and deputy. Coddington was a member of the Boston church under the Reverend John Cotton, and was caught up in the events of the Antinomian Controversy from 1636 to 1638. Deborah Coddington is a New Zealand journalist and former ACT New Zealand politician. Pre-political career Coddington, born in Waipukurau, worked from 1973 to 1984 as a magazine journalist, but in 1985 moved to Russell, a town in the Bay of Islands, where she owned and operated a café and restaurant. In 1989, she returned to journalism, writing for the ''Metro'' and '' North & South'' magazines. In 1993, she became a broadcaster, working for the BBC World Service's New Zealand operation. Boyd Coddington (August 28, 1944 – February 27, 2008) was an American hot rod designer, the owner of the Boyd Coddington Hot Rod Shop, and star of ''American Hot Rod'' on TLC (TV channel), TLC. Early life, education and early career Coddington grew up in Rupert, Idaho, reading all the car and hot rod magazines he could, and got his first car (a 1931 Chevrolet truck) at age 13. He attended machinist trade school and completed a three-year apprenticeship in machining. In 1968, he moved to California building hot rods by day and working as a machinist at Disneyland during the night. He soon became known for building unique hot rods and in 1977 he opened his own shop, Hot Rods by Boyd, in Stanton, California. His first major customer was Vern Luce whose car, a 1933 coupe, won the Al Slonaker Award at the 1981 Oakland, California, Oakland Roadster show. Coddington, Nottinghamshire
Coddington is an English village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, east of Newark-on-Trent. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 972, which increased to 1,684 at the 2011 Census. Mills Coddington Mill was a four-storey brick tower windmill built in 1859 to replace a post mill on the same site (). The tower was originally three storeys, raised to four when patent sails were fitted. It had two single and two double patent sails mounted on a cross, rotating anti-clockwise, with an eight-bladed fantail. It ceased working by wind about 1944, after being damaged by a blast from a landmine, and was derelict from 1947 until converted into a house some time after 1983. A post mill on a different site was recorded in 1818 as being owned by William Else; it had a two-storey roundhouse building. Emily Coddington Williams (born Emily Matilda Coddington, October 21, 1873 – August 8, 1952) was an American historian of mathematics, translator, novelist, playwright, and biographer. Early life and education Coddington was born on October 21, 1873, in New York City; her parents were of well-off colonial stock. Her father, a lawyer, died in 1876, and she came to live in Midtown Manhattan with her mother and grandmother. She passed the entrance examination for Harvard University in 1891, allowing her to study at the Harvard Annex, a precursor to Radcliffe College. Instead, she went to the University of London from 1894 to 1896, and earned a bachelor's degree there. In 1898, Columbia University awarded her a master's degree in mathematics, minoring in mechanics and Greek, based on a thesis she wrote at the end of her studies in London concerning the history of determinants. Coddington, Wisconsin
Coddington is an unincorporated community in the town of Buena Vista in Portage County, Wisconsin, United States. History Settlement at Coddington began after the area was drained by the Bradley Polytechnic Institute. In 1911, Wallace Bell "Wallie" Coddington platted "Pine Island" for residential living, surrounded by the present day town roads of Buena Vista Drive, O'Neill Lane, Coddington Road, and Lake Road. He is said to have chosen the name "Pine Island" because of the group of pine trees clustered on a section of higher ground, surrounded by ash and birch trees in the swampy lowlands. After receiving a post office, "Pine Island" was renamed Coddington in honor of its founder. Coddington had a railroad station at the time when the train passed through the areas of Stevens Point to points southward. He co-discovered the comet C/1898 L1 (Coddington-Pauly), also known by the older designation Comet 1898 VII. Henry Coddington
Henry Coddington (1798/9, Oldbridge, County Meath — 3 March 1845, Rome) was an Anglo Irish natural philosopher, fellow and tutor of Trinity College, Cambridge and Church of England clergyman. Life Henry Coddington was the son of Latham Coddington, Rector of Timolin, Kildare. Admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1816, Coddingtion graduated BA as Senior Wrangler in 1820, and first Smith's prizeman; proceeded M.A. in 1823, and obtained a fellowship and sub-tutorship in his college. He retired to the college living of Ware in Hertfordshire, and in the discharge of his clerical duties burst a blood-vessel, thereby fatally injuring his health. Coddington was vicar of Ware, Hertfordshire from 1832 to 1845. Advised to try a southern climate, he travelled abroad, and died at Rome 3 March 1845. John William Coddington (born 16 December 1937, in Worksop) is a former professional footballer who played as a centre half in the Football League for Huddersfield Town, Blackburn Rovers and Stockport County.
