Chumbawamba
Chumbawamba () were a British rock band formed in 1982 and disbanded in 2012. They are best known for their 1997 single "Tubthumping", which was nominated for Best British Single at the 1998 Brit Awards. Other singles include "Amnesia", " Enough Is Enough" (with MC Fusion), " Timebomb", "Top of the World (Olé, Olé, Olé)", and "Add Me". The band drew on genres such as punk rock, pop, and folk. Their anarcho-communist political leanings led them to have an irreverent attitude toward authority, and to espouse a variety of political and social causes including animal rights and pacifism (early in their career) and later regarding class struggle, Marxism, feminism, gay liberation, pop culture, and anti-fascism. In July 2012, Chumbawamba announced they were splitting up after 30 years. Tubthumping
"Tubthumping" is a song released by British rock band Chumbawamba from their eighth studio album, ''Tubthumper'' (1997). It is the band's most successful single, peaking at number two on the UK Singles Chart. It topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and hit number six on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100 (although it topped the US Modern Rock and Mainstream Top 40 charts). "Amnesia" is the second single from English rock band Chumbawamba's eighth studio album, ''Tubthumper'' (1997). The song's lyrics address the sense of betrayal that English leftists felt during the rise of New Labour. Released on 19 January 1998, the song was met with favorable reception from critics, who regarded the song as a highlight from ''Tubthumper''. The song was a top-10 hit in Canada and the United Kingdom, giving the group their final top-20 entries in both countries. Credit To The Nation
Credit to the Nation are a British hip hop group, who had chart success in the 1990s and are best known for their Nirvana-sampling single "Call It What You Want". The band is fronted by Matty Hanson (a.k.a. MC Fusion) and was initially noted for fusing a conscious hip hop style with political elements taken from the British left-wing and anarchist movements. Dunstan Bruce
Dunstan Bruce (born 31 December 1960) is an English musician and filmmaker who is perhaps best known for his work with Leeds-based anarcho-pop band Chumbawamba, of which he was a founding member. He grew up in the northern industrial town of Billingham. Career Musician Prior to Chumbawamba, Bruce sang for the Billingham-based band Men in a Suitcase. At the beginning of 1982, Bruce joined Chumbawamba and was the lead singer of the band's biggest hit single, "Tubthumping". Bruce left Chumbawamba at the end of 2004 after struggles and a rivalry with Boff Whalley, and the band eventually split up in 2012. "Timebomb" is a single from Chumbawamba's album ''Anarchy''. It reached #59 on UK Charts in 1993. The album version of "Timebomb" combined elements of both the main single version and the "Techno Timebomb" remix, which was included as a B-side on this single. The chorus of the song is derived from Stephen Stills' Buffalo Springfield song "For What It's Worth" . The single also includes a cover of Leon Rosselson's 1975 song "The World Turned Upside Down", which was originally made popular by fellow English singer/songwriter Billy Bragg. Alice Nutter (writer)
Alice Nutter (born Anne Holden; 10 July 1962) is a British musician, best known as part of the anarchist music group Chumbawamba, and writer for theatre, radio and television. Early life She was born in Burnley, Lancashire and attended Towneley High School. Musical career Nutter joined Chumbawamba in 1982, not long after the band formed, and took up residence in their squat in Armley.; Steve Bottoms, 'Struggling to be Human', in the programme for the 2013 West Yorkshire Playhouse production ''My Generation''. With her music and politics closely integrated, Nutter picketed during the 1984-85 miners' strike and the 1986 Wapping dispute. Lou Watts
Louise "Lou" Watts (born 4 June 1962) is a British musician, perhaps best known for her work as the lead singer of anarcho-punk and later folk band, Chumbawamba. Born in Burnley, Watts was introduced to the band by friend and member Alice Nutter. She was a member of Chumbawamba from their formation in 1982 until their disbandment in 2012. She joined Boff Whalley, Danbert Nobacon and Midge and Tomi in 1982 to form the original line-up, and the band made their live debut in January of that year. Allan Mark "Boff" Whalley (born 1 January 1961) is an English musician and writer. Formerly the lead guitarist for the anarcho-punk and folk band Chumbawamba, he is now a playwright and the founder of Commoners Choir who released their first album in March 2017. Early life and education Whalley was born Allan Mark Whalley in 1961 in Burnley, Lancashire. Before joining Chumbawamba he attended Art College in Maidstone and worked in a supermarket and as a postman. His parents were both primary school teachers. He has a sister named Annie.
