Canoeing At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's K-1 500 Metres
The men's K-1 500 metres competition in canoeing at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in Beijing. The K-1 event is raced in single-person kayaks. This would be the last time the event would take place at the Summer Olympics. On 13 August 2009, it was announced by the International Canoe Federation that the men's 500 m events would be replaced by 200 m events at the 2012 Summer Olympics with one of them being K-1 200 m for the women. Tim Brabants
Jules Timothy Brabants MBE (born 23 January 1977) is a British sprint kayaker who has competed since the late 1990s. Competing in four Summer Olympics, he won three medals with one gold (2008: K-1 1000 m) and two bronzes (2000: K-1 1000 m, 2008: K-1 500 m). Early life and education Tim Brabants was born in Chertsey. He first began his canoeing career at Elmbridge Canoe Club in Elmbridge. Brabants was educated at the Salesian School, a Voluntary Aided co-educational Roman Catholic comprehensive school in Chertsey, Surrey, followed by the University of Nottingham. Career Brabants trained at Royal Canoe Club, the world's oldest canoe club located in Teddington, London. Stjepan Janić ( sr, Стјепан Јанић; born 24 November 1980 in Bačka Palanka, Serbia), is a Serbian and Croatian sprint canoer. In 1998, he won his first silver medal as a member of the Serbia and Montenegro (then under Yugoslavia) crew which took the K-2 1000 m title at the World Championships in Szeged, Hungary. Anton Ryakhov (born May 29, 1980) is an Uzbek-born Russian sprint canoer who has competed since the early 2000s. He won nine medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships with three silvers (K-1 200 m: 2002, K-1 500 m: 2001, 2006) and six bronzes (K-1 200 m: 2001, 2003, 2005; K-1 500 m: 2002, K-2 1000 m: 2010, K-4 1000 m: 2011). Shaun Rubenstein (born 5 November 1983 in Johannesburg, Gauteng) is a South African canoer and Olympian. Career As a junior canoeist, Rubenstein competed in all forms of the sport, from sprints to river marathons.
