Boxing At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's Super Heavyweight
The men's super heavyweight boxing competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro was held from 9 to 21 August at the Riocentro. Tony Yoka won the gold medal, beating Joe Joyce in the final. The medals for the competition were presented by Irena Szewińska, Poland, IOC member, and the gifts were presented by Kelani Bayor, Vice President of the AIBA. Riocentro
Riocentro is an exhibition and convention center located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in 1977, it is the largest exhibition center in Latin America. Notable events 1981 May Day attack On April 30, 1981, during a May Day music concert, Riocentro was the target of a terrorist attack by hardliner members of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985). Sergeant Guilherme Pereira do Rosário and then-Captain Wilson Dias Machado, nowadays a Colonel, were responsible for detonating two bombs at the venue. Around 9 p.m., however, one of the bombs exploded in the lap of Sergeant Rosário, killing him and seriously wounding Machado. A second bomb exploded a few miles away at a powerhouse responsible for providing electrical energy to Riocentro; it was thrown over the fence and exploded on the ground, and the electric power supply was never interrupted that evening. Erik Pfeifer (born 22 January 1987) is a German professional boxer who has held the WBO European heavyweight title since 2019. As an amateur he won bronze medals at the 2011 and 2013 World Championships and competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. Amateur career He won his first medal in 2005, as he won the bronze medal at the Junior European Championship, in 2009 he won the Europe Championship which is not to be confused with the European Amateur Boxing Championships. Nigel Paul (born 27 June 1989) is a super heavyweight boxer from Trinidad and Tobago. In 2015 he won the Trinidad & Tobago National Novice Championships and became 7th at the AMBC American Confederation Boxing Championships. In 2016 he became 2nd at the American Qualification Event for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games and qualified for the Olympic boxing tournament. Efe Ajagba (born 22 April 1994) is a Nigerian professional boxer who holds the record for the fastest victory in boxing history after his opponent was disqualified for leaving the ring one second after the opening bell. As an amateur, he won a gold medal at the 2015 African Games and bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Early life Ajagba was born on 22 April 1994 in Ughelli, Delta State, Nigeria. He formerly worked in a bakery. Amateur career Ajagba took up the sport of boxing in 2011 after previously playing football for a club in Ughelli since 2005. He was coached by Anthony Konyegwachie. Bakhodir Jalolov ( uz, Bahodir Jalolov) is an Uzbekistani professional boxer who won a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships, and gold at the 2019 World Championships and 2020 Summer Olympics. He also competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and acted as Uzbekistan's flag bearer at both games. Mahommedrasul Majidov ( az, Məhəmmədrəsul Məcidov) (born 27 September 1986) is an Azerbaijani professional boxer.
