Betty Karnette
Betty Karnette (née Petty; September 13, 1931 – September 8, 2021) was an American politician who served in the California State Assembly from 1992 to 1994 and from 2004 to 2008 and in the California State Senate from 1996 to 2004. She was elected to a second stint in the California State Assembly in November 2004 to represent the California's 54th State Assembly district, 54th district. Her district included the cities of Avalon, California, Avalon, Long Beach, California, Long Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, California, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, San Pedro, California, San Pedro, and Signal Hill, California, Signal Hill. Rolling Hills Estates is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. On the northern side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, facing Torrance, Rolling Hills Estates is mostly residential. Incorporated in 1957, Rolling Hills Estates has many horse paths. The population was 8,067 at the 2010 census, up from 7,676 at the 2000 census. In 2018, the population rose to 8,141. Battered Woman Syndrome
Battered woman syndrome (BWS) is a pattern of signs and symptoms displayed by a woman who has suffered persistent intimate partner violence: whether psychological, physical, or sexual, from her male partner. It is classified in the ICD-9 (code ) as battered person syndrome, but is not in the DSM-5. It may be diagnosed as a subcategory of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The condition is the basis for the battered woman legal defense that has been used in cases of physically and psychologically abused women who have killed their male partners. The condition was first researched extensively by Lenore E. Walker, who used Martin Seligman's learned helplessness theory to explain why women stayed in relationships with abusive men.
