The Attorney-General of Barbados is the primary legal advisor to the Government of Barbados. The Government of Barbados (GoB), is a unitary parliamentary republic, where the President of Barbados represents as the head of state and the Prime Minister of Barbados represents as the head of government. Structure The country has a bicameral legislature and a political party system, based on universal adult suffrage and fair elections. The Senate has 21 members, appointed by the President, 12 on the advice of the Prime Minister, two on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition, and seven at the President's sole discretion. The House of Assembly has 30 members, all elected. Both houses debate all legislation. However, the House of Assembly may override Senate's rejection of money bills and other bills except bills amending the Constitution. Mia Mottley
Mia Amor Mottley, (born 1 October 1965) is a Barbadian politician and attorney who has served as the eighth prime minister of Barbados since 2018 and as Leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) since 2008. Mottley is the first woman to hold either position. She is also Barbados' first prime minister under its republican system, following constitutional changes she introduced that abolished the country's constitutional monarchy. Mottley has been the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Saint Michael North East since 1994. From 1994 to 2008, she held a succession of ministerial portfolios including the post of Attorney-General of Barbados becoming the first woman to be appointed as such. Adriel Dermont Brathwaite, SC (born 1962) is a Barbadian politician and lawyer, who formally held the positions of Attorney-General, Minister of Home Affairs, and Member of Parliament for Saint Philip South. Career Brathwaite is an attorney-at-law of over thirty years of practice. He worked in the British Virgin Islands for ten years before returning to Barbados. He was elected to Parliament as MP for Saint Philip South in the 2008 election. Freundel Jerome Stuart, OR, PC, SC (born 27 April 1951) is a Barbadian politician who served as seventh Prime Minister of Barbados and the leader of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) from 23 October 2010 to 21 February 2013; and from 21 February 2013 to 25 May 2018. Dale Dermot Marshall SC (born 25 November 1963) is the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs in Barbados. He was educated at St. Stephens Boys School, St. George Boys School, Combermere School, the University of the West Indies and the Hugh Wooding Law School. Marshall is the holder of an LL.B. with Honours and a Certificate in Legal Education. He is a member of the Barbados Bar Association and the Computer Law Association. Sir Maurice Athelstan King, KA, QC (1 January 1936 – 21 September 2021) was a Barbadian lawyer. Career In the late 1970s, King served as Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations, as well as a legal counsel for the Democratic Labour Party. He served as Attorney-General of Barbados from 1986 to 1989. He then went on to head the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and International Business from 1989 to 1993. Personal life King did his secondary education at Harrison College. He graduated from University of Manchester in 1960 and was called to the bar that year. He was knighted in 2009. He has a brother, Edmund King, also a lawyer. He died on 21 September 2021, at the age of 85. Sir Louis Randall Tull KA SC MP (born 27 January 1938) is a Barbados criminal attorney-at-Law and former BLP Member of Parliament. Career Louis Randall Tull was born in Lears, Saint Michael, Barbados on 27 January 1938. Having specialized in criminal law, Tull worked successfully at the Bar in Barbados during 1968. His first political appointment was as Minister of Education and Culture in 1976.
