''Appletons' Journal'' was an American magazine of literature, science, and arts. Published by D. Appleton & Company and debuting on April 3, 1869, its first editor was Edward L. Youmans, followed by Robert Carter, Oliver Bell Bunce, and Charles Henry Jones. It was published weekly until June 26, 1876, then monthly from July 1876 until its final issue December 1881. Edward is an English given name. It is derived from the Anglo-Saxon name ''Ēadweard'', composed of the elements '' ēad'' "wealth, fortune; prosperous" and '' weard'' "guardian, protector”. Robert Carter (February 5, 1819 Albany, New York – February 15, 1879 Cambridge, Massachusetts) was an American editor, historian and author. He was involved in the formation of the Republican Party. Biography Education He received a common school education, and passed one term in the Jesuit college of Chambly, Quebec. At 15, he was appointed assistant to the state librarian, who was also his guardian, at the state library at Albany. He remained there until 1838. At this time he began to publish poems and sketches in the daily papers, his first contribution being a long poem, which he dropped stealthily into the editor's letterbox, and which appeared the next day with flattering comments, but so frightfully misprinted that he hardly knew it. This experience and a natural aptitude led him to acquire proofreading as an accomplishment, at which he became very expert. Oliver Bell Bunce
Oliver Bell Bunce (February 8, 1828 – May 15, 1890) was an American author, editor, and playwright. Life He was born in New York City, in his youth he joined his uncle's stationery house Jansen & Bell. While connected with this house he began writing plays, several of which were brought out. ''Fate or the Prophecy'', a tragedy in blank verso, and ''Marco Bozzaris'' were played by James W. Wallack, and ''Love in '76'', a comedy, was played by Laura Keene in the leading woman's role. He also wrote a series of historical sketches which were afterward collected and published in a volume entitled ''The Romance of the Revolution.'' In 1854 Bunce and his brother established a publishing house with the firm name of Bunce & Brother. This firm published Ann S. Stephens's ''Monthly'' and Bunce acted as its editor. Charles Henry Jones (editor)
Charles Henry Jones (March 7, 1848 – January 26, 1913) was an American journalist, editor, and political figure. Born in Talbotton, Georgia, at age 15 he joined the Confederate Army during the Civil War. In 1866 he moved to New York, where he edited '' Eclectic Magazine'' and '' Appleton's Journal''. He moved to Jacksonville, Florida, in 1881, where he established the ''Florida Daily Times'', which incorporated rival ''Florida Union'' to become the ''Florida Times-Union''. He later was editor of '' St. Louis Republic'', '' St. Louis Dispatch'' (1895–97) and ''New York World'' (1893–95). He was president of the National Editorial Association, and was prominent in the Democratic Party, leading the Florida Democratic Party and writing the Chicago Platform of 1896 and Kansas City Platform of 1900.
