''NBA 2K'' is a series of basketball sports simulation video games developed by Visual Concepts and released annually since 1999. The premise of the series is to emulate the sport of basketball, and more specifically, the National Basketball Association. The series was originally published by Sega Sports. Beginning with 2005's ''NBA 2K6'', the series is currently published by 2K Sports. As of 2021, the series consists of twenty-three main installments and several spinoff titles across eighteen different platforms. An official eSports league, the '' NBA 2K League'', launched in 2018. Until 2018, the series' primary rival was EA Sports' '' NBA Live'' series. Gameplay Each installment in the ''NBA 2K'' series emulates the National Basketball Association, and present slight improvements over the previous installments. 2K is an American video game publisher based in Novato, California. 2K was founded under Take-Two Interactive in January 2005 through the 2K Games and 2K Sports labels, following Take-Two Interactive's acquisition of Visual Concepts that same month. Originally based in New York City, it moved to Novato in 2007. A third label, 2K Play, was added in September 2007. 2K is governed by David Ismailer as president and Phil Dixon as COO. A motion capture studio for 2K is based in Petaluma, California. History On January 24, 2005, Take-Two Interactive announced that it had acquired Visual Concepts, including its Kush Games subsidiary and the intellectual property of the ''2K'' sports-game series, from Sega for  million. WWE 2K
''WWE 2K'', formerly released as ''WWF/E SmackDown!'' and ''SmackDown vs. Raw'', is a series of professional wrestling sports video games that launched in 2000. The premise of the series is to emulate the sport of professional wrestling, and more specifically, that of WWE. The games were originally published by THQ and developed by Yuke's. 2K Sports took over as publisher beginning with 2013's '' WWE 2K14'', and the series was co-developed with Visual Concepts until Yuke's departure in 2018. Visual Concepts would take over lead development of the series beginning with ''WWE 2K20'' in 2019. History and development The first game, ''WWF SmackDown!'', was developed by Yuke's, published by THQ, and released on March 2, 2000; this arrangement would continue until 2012.
