Go (game)
Go is an abstract strategy board game for two players in which the aim is to surround more territory than the opponent. The game was invented in China more than 2,500 years ago and is believed to be the oldest board game continuously played to the present day. A 2016 survey by the International Go Federation's 75 member nations found that there are over 46 million people worldwide who know how to play Go and over 20 million current players, the majority of whom live in East Asia. The playing pieces are called stones. One player uses the white stones and the other, black. The players take turns placing the stones on the vacant intersections (''points'') of a board. Once placed on the board, stones may not be moved, but stones are removed from the board if the stone (or group of stones) is surrounded by opposing stones on all orthogonally adjacent points, in which case the stone or group is ''captured''. Simon Lewis (writer)
Simon Lewis (born 1971) is a Welsh novelist and screenwriter, born in Newport, Monmouthshire, in 1971. He went to school in Monmouth, then studied Art and Art History at Goldsmiths College in London. After graduation, he travelled extensively in Asia, before beginning work as a travel writer for Rough Guides publishing. He has since worked on five editions of the ''Rough Guide to China'' and is sole author of the ''Rough Guide to Shanghai'' and the ''Rough Guide to Beijing''. His first novel, ''Go'', a thriller about backpackers, was written in a village in the Himalayas. It was first published by small press Pulp Books in 1998, but, following favourable press, was picked up by Corgi (1999). It has since been translated into Swedish, German and Italian. ''Go!'' is a studio album by jazz musician Dexter Gordon featuring Sonny Clark, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins, recorded on August 27, 1962 and released in the same year on Blue Note. According to the liner notes by Ira Gitler, this session was "not recorded in a nightclub performance but, in its informal symmetry, it matches the relaxed atmosphere that the best of those made in that manner engender. Everyone was really together, in all the most positive meanings of that word." It was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs. Since its release, ''Go!'' has received very positive reviews from critics, with AllMusic giving it a five star rating. The album was re-released in March 1999 as part of Blue Note's RVG Series, produced by Michael Cuscuna. ''Go!'' is the debut album by Australian pop rockers, Cartman, which was released on 14 January 2002 via Embryo Records and distributed by MGM Distribution. ''Go!'' was selected as Triple J's Album of the Week. Scott Nicholls designed and created its artwork. The East Perth train terminal was chosen as the location for the cover art's photo shoot, accompanied by a small library of additional band photos taken throughout the band's career. The first track lifted from the album, "Shock", raced across the national airwaves and was selected as the eviction music for reality TV show, '' Big Brother''. "Shock" spent 17 weeks in the Triple J Net 50 and was voted in the Triple J Hottest 100 songs for 2002. Go! Discs
Go! Discs was a London-based record label, launched in 1983 from offices in Wendell Road, Shepherd's Bush, by Andy Macdonald and Lesley Symons. The pair founded the label after Macdonald left his job as press officer at Stiff Records, and Symons provided the seed funding. The first signing to the label was Billy Bragg and early releases also came from Sheffield band The Box and Hull band The Housemartins. Records by the latter's spin-off group The Beautiful South were subsequently issued. Key staff contributors, following a move to Hammersmith, included comedian Phill Jupitus and Cathal Smyth (Madness' Chas Smash). Go! Beat Records was launched as a subsidiary for artists like Beats International, Gabrielle and Portishead. In 1992, Paul Weller signed for the main Go! Discs label. Go Records (usually badged as Go!! Records) was a small independent Melbourne-based recording label which ran from 1964 to 1968. Its releases were manufactured and distributed by the Melbourne-based recording and electronics company Astor. The Go!! label was established by the producers of the similarly named ''The Go!! Show'', Horrie Dargie, Arthur Young and Johnny Tillbrook (known as 'DYT Productions'). The label was noted for its cross-promotion of singers with the television show. The label produced 54 singles but with only limited commercial success. The ''buk'' () is a traditional Korean drum. While the term ''buk'' is a native Korean word used as a generic term meaning "drum" (the Sino-Korean word being ''go''), it is most often used to refer to a shallow barrel-shaped drum, with a round wooden body that is covered on both ends with animal skin. ''Go!'' was a Saturday morning entertainment show on the Radio One network of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that ran from 2002 to 2010, hosted by Brent Bambury. The show included interviews, music, live performances, and comedy bits. The show first aired as a summer series in 2002, concurrently with Bambury's stint as host of ''All in a Day'', the network's local afternoon program in Ottawa. Following a second summer run in 2003, the show was added to the network's regular year-round schedule that fall. The show was produced in Ottawa before moving to Toronto in 2005. After 2004, most episodes were broadcast in front of a live studio audience.
