1989 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships
The 1989 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships (''1989 WJHC'') was the 13th edition of the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship and was held in Anchorage, Alaska, United States at the Sullivan Arena. The Soviet Union won the gold medal, its eighth, and ultimately final, championship. Sweden won silver, and Czechoslovakia the bronze. Final standings The 1989 tournament was a round-robin format, with the top three teams winning gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. ''West Germany was relegated to Pool B for 1990.'' Jeremy Roenick
Jeremy Shaffer Roenick ( ; born January 17, 1970) is an American former professional ice hockey player who played the majority of his career in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted 8th overall in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks, for whom he played from 1988 to 1996. Roenick subsequently played for the Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks over the course of his 20 NHL season career. He also represented Team USA in several international tournaments. On November 10, 2007, he became the third American-born player (Joe Mullen and Mike Modano were the first two) to score 500 goals. Josef Beránek (; born 25 October 1969) is a Czech former professional ice hockey player and coach. He was selected in the fourth round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, 78th overall, by the Edmonton Oilers. He has extensive professional playing experience, in the Czech Republic, the AHL, and the NHL. At the NHL level, he has played for the Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks, and Pittsburgh Penguins. He ended his playing career with HC Slavia Praha in the Czech Republic. Niklas Eriksson
Niklas Urban Eriksson (born February 17, 1969) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey player, continuing as an ice hockey coach. He won a gold medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics. Eriksson played most of his years in Leksands IF, and has also represented IFK Helsingfors (Finland) and HC Pustertal Wölfe (Italy). With 721 games for Leksands IF Eriksson is the player with most games for the club, and as of 2019 Eriksson is one of the honored players with jersey number 16 up in the ceiling of Tegera Arena. Milan Tichý (born September 22, 1969) is a Czech former professional ice hockey defenceman. He was drafted 153rd overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft and played 13 games for them during the 1992–93 NHL season. He was claimed by the Florida Panthers in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft but never played a game for them and was traded to the Winnipeg Jets for Brent Severyn before the season started. He spent the entire season in the American Hockey League with the Moncton Hawks and never played for Winnipeg. He moved to New York Islanders in 1994 and played ten games over two seasons. Lars Ricard Persson (born August 24, 1969) is a Swedish professional ice hockey player. Persson played in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues, and Ottawa Senators. Playing career Persson was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the 2nd round, 23rd overall in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. Rather than join the Devils though Persson chose to stay in his native Sweden where he played in the Elitserien where played for eight seasons, six with Leksands IF and two with Malmö IF. The 1994–1995 season finally saw Persson arrive to North America when he joined the Albany River Rats of the AHL for the playoffs after finishing the regular season in Sweden.
