Pliny the Elder produced what is one of the largest encyclopedias of the natural world in 77 AD, and must be regarded as the rightful successor to Theophrastus. For example, he accurately describes the octahedral shape of the diamond, and proceeds to mention that diamond dust is used by engravers to cut and polish other gems owing to its great hardness. India

Excavations at Harappa, Mohenjo-daro and other sites of the Indus Valley civilization (IVC) have uncovered evidence of the use of "practical mathematics". The people of the IVC manufactured bricks whose dimensions were in the proportion 4:2:1, considered favourable for the stability of a brick structure. They used a standardised system of weights based on the ratios: 1/20, 1/10, 1/5, 1/2, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500, with the unit weight equaling approximately 28 grammes (and approximately equal to the English ounce or Greek uncia). They mass-produced weights in regular geometrical shapes, which included hexahedron, hexahedra, barrels, cone (geometry), cones, and cylinder (geometry), cylinders, thereby demonstrating knowledge of basic

. The inhabitants of Indus civilisation also tried to standardise measurement of length to a high degree of accuracy. They designed a ruler—the ''Mohenjo-daro ruler''—whose unit of length (approximately 1.32 inches or 3.4 centimetres) was divided into ten equal parts. Bricks manufactured in ancient Mohenjo-daro often had dimensions that were integral multiples of this unit of length. Mehrgarh, a Neolithic IVC site, provides the earliest known evidence for ''in vivo'' drilling of human teeth, with recovered samples dated to 7000-5500 BCE. Early astronomy in India—like in other cultures— was intertwined with religion.Sarma (2008), ''Astronomy in India'' The first textual mention of astronomical concepts comes from the Vedas—religious literature of India. According to Sarma (2008): "One finds in the Rigveda intelligent speculations about the genesis of the universe from nonexistence, the configuration of the universe, the Spherical Earth, spherical self-supporting earth, and the year of 360 days divided into 12 equal parts of 30 days each with a periodical intercalary month." Classical Indian astronomy documented in literature spans the Maurya period, Maurya (Vedanga Jyotisha, c. 5th century BCE) to the Vijayanagara, Vijaynagara(South India) (such as the 16th century Kerala school of astronomy and mathematics, Kerala school) periods. The first named authors writing treatises on astronomy emerge from the 5th century, the date when the classical period of Indian astronomy can be said to begin. Besides the theories of Aryabhata in the ''Aryabhatiya'' and the lost ''Arya-siddhānta'', we find the ''Pancha-Siddhāntika'' of Varahamihira. The astronomy and the

of History of India, ancient India (Jyotisha) is based upon sidereal astrology, sidereal calculations, although a Tropics, tropical system was also used in a few cases. Alchemy (Rasaśāstra in Sanskrit)was popular in India. It was the Indian alchemist and philosopher Kanada (philosopher), Kanada who introduced the concept of 'anu' which he defined as the matter which cannot be subdivided. This is analogous to the concept of atom in modern science. Linguistics (along with phonology, morphology (linguistics), morphology, etc.) first arose among Indian grammarians studying the Sanskrit language. Hemachandra, Aacharya Hemachandrasuri wrote grammars of Sanskrit and Prakrit, poetry, prosody, lexicons, texts on science and logic and many branches of Indian philosophy. The ''Siddha-Hema-Śabdanuśāśana'' includes six Prakrit languages: the "standard" Prakrit(virtually Maharashtri Prakrit), Shauraseni language, Shauraseni, Magahi language, Magahi, Paiśācī, the otherwise-unattested Cūlikāpaiśācī and Apabhraṃśa (virtually Gurjar Apabhraṃśa, prevalent in the area of Gujarat and Rajasthan at that time and the precursor of Gujarati language). He gave a detailed grammar of Apabhraṃśa and also illustrated it with the folk literature of the time for better understanding. It is the only known Apabhraṃśa grammar. The Sanskrit grammar of Pāṇini (c. 520 – 460 BCE) contains a particularly detailed description of Sanskrit morphology (linguistics), morphology, phonology and Root (linguistics), roots, evincing a high level of linguistic insight and analysis. Ayurveda medicine traces its origins to the Vedas, Atharvaveda in particular, and is connected to Hindu religion. The ''Sushruta Samhita'' of Sushruta appeared during the 1st millennium BC.Dwivedi & Dwivedi (2007) Ayurvedic practice was flourishing during the time of Buddha (around 520 BC), and in this period the Ayurvedic practitioners were commonly using mercury (element), Mercuric-sulphur combination based medicines. An important Ayurvedic practitioner of this period was Nagarjuna, accompanied by Surananda, Nagbodhi, Yashodhana, Nityanatha, Govinda, Anantdev, Vagbhatta etc. During the regime of Chandragupta Maurya (375-415 AD), Ayurveda was part of mainstream Indian medical techniques, and continued to be so until the Colonial India, Colonial period. The main authors of classical Indian mathematics (400 CE to 1200 CE) were scholars like Mahaviracharya, Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, and Bhaskara II. Indian mathematicians made early contributions to the study of the Decimal, decimal number system, 0 (number), zero, negative numbers, arithmetic, and algebra. In addition, trigonometry, having evolved in the Hellenistic civilisation, Hellenistic world and having been introduced into ancient India through the translation of Greek language, Greek works, was further advanced in India, and, in particular, the modern definitions of sine and cosine were developed there. These mathematical concepts were transmitted to the Middle East, China, and Europe and led to further developments that now form the foundations of many areas of mathematics.


China and the Far East

The first recorded observations of solar eclipses and supernovae were made in China.Ancient Chinese Astronomy
On July 4, 1054, Chinese astronomers observed a ''guest star'', a supernova, the remnant of which is now called the Crab Nebula. Korean contributions include similar records of meteor showers and eclipses, particularly from 1500-1750 in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture and Chinese herbology, herbal medicine were also practised, with similar Traditional Korean medicine, medicine practised in Korea. Among the earliest inventions were the abacus, the public toilet, and the "shadow clock".''Inventions'' (Pocket Guides). Joseph Needham noted the "Four Great Inventions" of China as among some of the most important technological advances; these were the compass, gunpowder, papermaking, and printing, which were later known in Europe by the end of the Middle Ages. The Tang dynasty (AD 618 - 906) in particular was a time of great innovation. A good deal of exchange occurred between Western and Chinese discoveries up to the Qing dynasty. However, Needham and most scholars recognised that cultural factors prevented these Chinese achievements from developing into what might be considered "modern science". It was the religious and philosophical framework of the Chinese intellectuals which made them unable to believe in the ideas of laws of nature:


Islamic Science

There are many time periods involved within the history of science which is still continued to this day. One major tine period is between the 7th and 16th century which marks the time period of the embarking of Islamic science under the development of islamic civilizations. The are many reason why science flourished in this time period within the region. The most important reason being was that islamic religion and the islamic government greatly supported the ones researching and further expanding their knowledge on science, The researchers were also greatly respected by the people. Within the people researching there was Avicenna, Ibn Sina, out of the many things he did including writing The Canon of Medicine; he established free hospitals and developed many great treatments unknown to man. Another person to receive recognition was Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi, Al-Riza who wrote Treatise on Small-poxs and Measles, he created separate wings in hospitals for the mentally ill which was un-heard of. Besides these two men there are many other researches who expanded the knowledge of Science within the Islamic civilizations. When there is a rise there will always be a fall. The reign of knowledge pertaining to Science has mostly come to an end in the islamic civilizations. When religious leaders started to gain more political power within the community the more research done on scientific topics started to come to a halt.


Islamic Medicine

During this time period many attributions were made to the medical knowledge known to man and this completely changed the face of medicine before this time. Before this time there was some knowledge that the islamic researches and people had access to like Hippocrates and Galen being the main two, with this knowledge they could further expand the topics of Medicine. Like said before one of the two main physicians within this time period was Ibn-Sina what wrote " The Canon of Medicine" was a very important figure within the expansion of knowledge. The Canon of Medicine, which is still the most popular and used medical textbooks in the world. This book is divided into fiver chapters; Chapter one : is a basic knowledge over medical principles as well an overview of anatomy and therapeutic procedures, Chapter Two: Is an overview of medical substances and their general properties, Chapter three : This chapter contains diagnosis and treatments of diseases known to a specific body part or Organ, Chapter four: covers conditions or diseases not specific to one part of the body, and finally chapter five: is over Compound remedies and their formulas. The second main researcher of the reign in expanding knowledge during the Islamic time period was Al-Riza, he is sometimes known in the Medieval period as the greatest physician of his time. Al-Riza created over two-hundred works and over half of those works are basically over medical knowledge. The most important work that Riza ever did was ''Kitab al-Hawi fi al-tibb'' or commonly known as The Comprehensive book of Medicine. This is considered one of his most important works because it was created by his personal medical notes collected throughout the years over everything he has read and observations of medical experience coming straight from his own eyes. The ''Kitab al-Hawi fi al-tibb'' is a collaboration of 23 volumes all pertaining different information, Each value goes into detail over specific diseases and parts of the body. There are many other important figures within this time period that further expanded the knowledge of medicine but Ibn-Sina and Al-Riza are acknowledged to be the most important figures of this time.


Islamic Astronomy

Another huge area of expansion during the times of the 7th and 16th centuries was the topic of astronomy there many contributions made to astronomy during this time. There was a lot of previous known information before the start of research from many other places. The islamic people helped update the calculations and mathematics for measuring and calculating the movements of the plantes or "the heavenly bodies". This was not the only thing they were doing they also were updating models for the movement of the heavenly bodies. There were many people who contributed to these updates and other research but there are a few that really stuck out. Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi was one the most influential figures in improving the geometrical models of Ptolemy. Abd wrote Book of the Images of the Fixed Stars which described the forty-eight constellations formed by fixed stars. Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi was a very important figure because of the expansions he made in the world of Astronomy to this time. The study of Astrology was also another huge expansion in the turn of the century in Islam. Three main figures were Abu Ma'shar al-Balkhi, al-Biruni and Nasir al-Din al-Tusi these three men all wrote Treatise having to deal with astrology. Many believe these Treatise were going against the Islamic religion and would have people turn away from their religion but they were wrong. People were hired by Royal Courts to decided when to announce important information and when to make decisions on specific topics. Astrologers would even help people predict their futures ad read their horoscopes.


Conclusion

The islamic period was very enlightening to both the Medical and Astrological view point of the people. These researchers, scientist, and astronomers completely changed the outlook of these topics for the better. Many wrote treatise and books to outline the studies they have conducted so that their information could be spread and people would learn what was truly out there in the world. Medical advancement were made they further helped us understand the body that we live in today and Astrological advancement were found that could help future astronomers and astrologist figure out what type of universe we live in and whats really out there. Many of these books and Treatise are still used and studied today and have withstood the time. The Canon of Medicine is still one of the most used textbook in medical history today. People like Ibn-Sina and Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi helped put the topic of Islamic Science in our textbooks today. There will always be rise and Falls in history but that doesn't mean the history will totally disappear we will continue to learn and flourish from this information today.
