. At the National Census of 2006, its population (as Zamkan Rural District of the Central District) was 6,998 in 1,495 households. There were 6,213 inhabitants in 1,466 households at the following census of 2011. At the most recent census of 2016, the population of the rural district was 5,070 in 1,301 households. The largest of its 40 villages was Mirabad, with 966 people. In 2019, Zamkan Rural District's name was changed to Zamkan-e Jonubi Rural District, separated from the Central District, and became, along with the new Zamkan-e Shomali Rural District, a part of the newly established Zamkan District.
