Kokov graduated from the Law Department of

and joined the agencies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Kabardino-Balkarian ASSR in 1979. Until 1999 he held various positions in criminal investigation units, in the Council of Ministers and in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In 1999 he was transferred to work in Moscow. On December 6, 2013 he was appointed Acting Head of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic.
