For modern times era, the protagonist is Yugi Mutou. He is taking part in a tournament when he is tasked by Atem with retrieving relics that the Prince needs to complete his quest, which are held by some of the contestants in the tournament.

If the player decides not to duel, their turn is over. Whoever gets the most star points, which come from successful summonings, or is the last one standing wins. There is also a bonus boss at the end of the game that spawns from the "dark cards."
