Background

The song is the title track of Swindell's second album '' You Should Be Here''. The song was written as a tribute to his father, who died unexpectedly while Swindell was out on his radio tour in September 2013, shortly after Swindell had signed a record deal with Warner Music Nashville. According to CMT News, Swindell's father, William Swindell, died unexpectedly "when a truck he was working on fell on him."
