The mountain's toponym was officially adopted on March 4, 1965, by the

. The mountain was named in 1954 by William Lowell Putnam III for Yggdrasil, the great ash tree symbolizing the universe according to
Norse mythology Norse, Nordic, or Scandinavian mythology is the body of myths belonging to the North Germanic peoples, stemming from Old Norse religion and continuing after the Christianization of Scandinavia, and into the Nordic folklore of the modern period ...
. It is pronounced "ig DRAYsel" and was so named to follow the naming theme of nearby Mount Wotan and Mount Fria which were also derived from Norse mythology.
