Wrist (Chris Brown Song)

"Wrist" is a song by American recording artist Chris Brown from his seventh studio album ''Royalty''. It was launched along with an iTunes pre-order of the album on December 3, 2015. It was produced by The MeKanics and Khemasis and features rapper Solo Lucci. The song received mixed reviews from music critics and peaked at number 17 on the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles, and number 46 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

An official remix of the song featuring Young Thug and Jeezy was released in 2016 and is contained in OHB and Brown's collaborative mixtape '' Before the Trap: Nights in Tarzana''.

Background and composition

Brown composed the song in 2015 at Record Plant recording studio, in Los Angeles, California, during the recording sessions of his ''Royalty'' album. The song was worked on alongside different songwriters and producers, including Lyrica Anderson, Christopher Dotson, Floyd "A1" Bentley and Bobby Luv. These composers were later recruited by the singer to work with him on several songs of his subsequent album, ''Heartbreak on a Full Moon''. Afterwards of his recordings, Brown wanted "Wrist" to have a guest appereance from a Texas rapper, and being indecisive between Bun B and Solo Lucci, he eventually ended up choosing Lucci.

Music video

On December 15, 2015 Brown uploaded the music video for "Wrist" on his YouTube and Vevo account. The music video is part of ''Royalty'' music videos storyline, following the conclusion of Brown's " Back to Sleep" music video.

Synopsis

Brown wakes up and goes for a walk, but is caught by the old man's henchwoman who drugs him again with a dust-like substance. In another trance-like sequence, Brown is dragged into another dark room by the henchwoman, inter-cut with clips of him and rapper Solo Lucci performing and dancing to "Wrist". She seduces him as he is tied to a chair, then tries to slit his throat, but Brown glitches out of his trap and the henchwoman is bound to the chair in his stead, allowing his escape.

Critical reception

"Wrist" received mixed reviews from music critics. Susan Smith of ''The Columbus Dispatch'' said that Brown on the song puts on his "singer-with-rapper-sensibilities" persona, for an "edgy" and "very likable" song. Michael Arcenaux of ''Complex'' said that the song "comes across as rather banal and beneath Brown's talent". Brad Wete of ''Billboard'' said that the song is one of the standout moments on ''Royalty'', comparing it to Brown's previous single " Look at Me Now" (2011).
