The name Worongary is derived from an Aboriginal word ''Whorrongary'', meaning vine or flight of a pigeon. The Worongary State School opened on 1 February 1993. Hinterland Baptist Church was established in 1995. Its timber church building was relocated from another site. In the , Worongary had a population of 5,613 people.
