History
In 1898 the club accepted a new One Design Class boat, not to cost more than £35 complete. The
Seabird Half Rater
The Seabird Half Rater is the oldest one design class still sailing in Britain. It is a 20 ft Carvel (boat building), carvel planked sailing boat, with a design dating back to 1898. As of the 2017 season there have been 101 built _designed_by_Herbert_Baggs_and_W._Scott_Hayward._The_first_eight_boats_were_built_by_Latham_of_Crossens_at_a_cost_of_£34_17s_6d_each._The_boats_were_named_after_Seabirds_and_their_ratings_(competitive_performance)_were_assessed_at_0.5,_hence_the_term_Half_Rater._The_first_race_was_sailed_off_the_Southport_Pierhead_on_13_June_1899_when_eight_boats_raced_over_a_ten-mile_course_and_Goshawk_No.2_won.
