Born in Berlin, Leimert besuchte bis zu seinem Abitur 1957 die EOS „Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe“ in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Privaten Musikunterricht erhielt er bei Gustav William Meyer in Grüna.
