Etymology

The etymology of the name of the village, ''Vokopolë'', comes from Slavic. ''Voko'' comes from the word or meaning 'wolf', and ''pole'' from the word meaning 'field', together suggesting a 'field of wolves'. The word or eventually turned into ''Vokopolë'' in the Albanian language. This would translate to sq, Fushë ujku. The placename originated between the years 600–1370, when Albania had several periods of Slav rule and Slavic migrations. For example, the

. It is on a hill at above sea level, northwest of Vokopola, in the Ballolli region, close to the city of Berat. It is a monument of cultural heritage, recognized as such on January 8, 1977. The construction technique used to build the castle suggests that it may have served as a military garrison. Along with the castle, Ali Pasha also built the Vokopolë Bridge during his rule. This old Ottoman bridge located in the village of Vokopola, was built in the 18th century, connecting the villages of Vokopolë and Tërpan. The Vokopola mosque is located in the centre of the village, built sometime in the 19th century. In 1967–1968, this cultural monument lost its function as a religious building, being turned into a warehouse for keeping agricultural products. After the 1990s, the monument resumed its purpose as a religious facility. The present architecture of the mosque appears to have changed compared to its pre-communist-era state: the windows on the western and eastern sides are blocked, while the minaret is destroyed. The interior has also undergone changes, the floor has been destroyed, while the walls have been painted with white glaze, obliterating any trace of previous frescoes or inscriptions. The dome of the mosque is small, semi-circular in shape, and built with tiles. There are many possibilities that these changes were made in the phase of returning the mosque to storage during the period of the communist government. Its condition is poor and requires immediate restoration intervention. Vokopola has a history full of events, but the most remembered is when the Albanian patriot Kostandin Gjorga, the delegate of
Ismail Qemali Ismail Qemal bey Vlora, mostly known as Ismail Qemali (; 16 January 184426 January 1919), was an Albanian diplomat, politician, rilindas, statesman and the Founding Father of modern Albania, and one of the most famous Southern Albanian perso ...
