He competed as a junior at the 2006 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and helped the Ethiopian team to a junior team bronze with his tenth-place finish. At the 2006 African Championships he finished fifth in the 10,000 metres with a personal best time of 28:15.16 minutes. He finished seventh at the

He significantly improved his marathon best in April at the Paris Marathon to win the race over more-favoured opposition in a time of 2:06:41 – establishing him as the fifth-fastest ever Ethiopian over the distance. He took the top honours at the Portugal Half Marathon in September, beating Josphat Menjo and Francis Kiprop to win in 1:01:05.
