Kilmore, where he established Kilmore Free Press in 1865, later acquiring the ''Examiner''. In 1868 he married Catherine Mary Flynn in Melbourne. He established several other country newspapers, but ultimately sold them all to become chairman of the Imperial Banking Company, suffering heavy losses. In 1874 he was elected to the

Upper Goulburn in 1904 for his final term, which ended in 1908. Hunt died at Kilmore in 1934.
