Rudolph had previously hosted a variety show titled ''The Maya Rudolph Show'', with a standalone pilot aired on May 19, 2014. In its original form it was not initially picked up for series. Beginning in 2015, the concept was revived and went through approximately one year's worth of redevelopment.
