Dharmasena played in Sri Lankan domestic cricket for

, making his first-class cricket debut in 1989. His Sri Lankan cricket career was cut short when, in 1993, he moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to work as a banker. His career continued in the UAE, where he was a prolific batsman in club cricket. In February 2020, he was named in Sri Lanka's squad for the Over-50s Cricket World Cup in South Africa.
