History

Originally known as "East Mount Carmel", the name of the community was changed around the time a post office was established in August 1887. Through history summer has always been considered the easier time of the year. A term used during the pioneer days was "the summer side of life." The original post office and train station were together and opened on Aicholtz Road near Cinti-Batavia Pike / Rt 74 and operated by agent Kate Grissell. The post office board and Ms Grissell decided that they needed to drop the East Mt Carmel moniker and create a new name which was derived from the 'summer side of life' as the result of an actual contest to name the town held in the township.
