Laos is divided into 17
provinces (''khoueng'') and one prefecture (''kampheng nakhon'') which includes the capital city Vientiane (''Nakhon Louang Viangchan'').
Provinces are further divided into
districts (''muang'') and then villages (''ban''). An 'urban' village is essentially a town.
