History

The town comprises patents of various pre-Revolutionary grants, including part of the extensive land grants of

. Settlement began ''circa'' 1800, by settlers from Connecticut. The town was formed in 1805 from the town of Palatine while still part of Montgomery County. Part of the town was removed in 1842 to create part of the town of Caroga. The population of Stratford was 353 in 1810.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 2.34%, is water. The northern town line is the border of Hamilton County, and the western town boundary is the border of Herkimer County, partially delineated by East Canada Creek. The town is in the Adirondack Park. New York State Route 29A is an east-west highway in Stratford.

As of the census of 2000, there were 640 people, 237 households, and 167 families residing in the town. The population density was 8.5 people per square mile (3.3/km2). There were 525 housing units at an average density of 7.0 per square mile (2.7/km2).
