History

In the late 18th and early 19th century, many people living in the growing towns rented small plots of land on the outskirts as

or productive gardens. These gardens were typically between 1/8 and 1/6 of an

, separated from the neighbouring plots by

s. Stoney Road Allotments began life as a collection of these gardens in Cheylesmore park shortly after 1853. Various structures were built on some of the plots, including an elaborate half-timbered

which is still present today. In July 1935 the City Council acquired the allotments for the sum of £1100. The site was Grade II* listed on the 7th of March 2001 because it retains features of the original pleasure-gardens as well as period structures including summer houses and glasshouses.
