His 2002 victory was significant as he had only been able to devote himself to gymnastics on a part-time basis, owing to limited funding for the sport in Scotland at that time, and had not been considered as a possible medalist. Prior to his 2002 success, Steve worked as a fitness instructor at the Livingwell Health Club in Maida-Vale, London. Frew is a member of the Athletes Commission for Scotland, and as a member of the Glasgow 2014 bid team, he travelled to Colombo, Sri Lanka to secure the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Frew has also worked as an athlete mentor for the Sky Sports Living for Sport Programme, run by the Youth Sport Trust.
