History

Salins is first mentioned in 1200 as ''Salaig''. In 1227 it was mentioned as ''Salen''. The municipality was formerly known by its German name ''Schalein'', however, that name is no longer used.


Geography

Before the merger, Salins had a total area of . Of this area, or 32.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while or 51.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, or 14.7% is settled (buildings or roads) and or 0.7% is unproductive land.
