S R Janakiraman started learning music in 1938. His big breakthrough came in 1945 when he joined Kalakshetra and learned music under the guidance of Tiger Varadachari, Budalur Krishnamurthy Sastri, T. K. Ramasami Ayyangar and Kalpagam Swaminathan.
