Paradoxically, the opening of the new airport coincided with a long-term decrease in the number of connections from Kaunas: the new airport had limited passenger facilities and the economic downturn of the early 1990s resulted in a significant overall reduction of air communication.
After the withdrawal of the Russian Air Force in 1993, Aleksotas / S. Darius and S. Girėnas Airport serves general aviation. The airport hosts the Kaunas Air Club.
Its historical importance makes it a natural host for the
