Early life

Mumbi was born in Kiamaiko, a slum in Nairobi Kenya.


Career

In 2010, Mumbi founded and led "Warembo Ni Yes," a group of young women committed to ensuring the passage of Kenya's current constitution. Mumbi is currently the co-ordinator of Bunge La Wamama Mashinani, a women’s chapter of Bunge la Mwananchi founded in 2008. The movement advocates for, and campaigns on, social justice issues and accountability in different parts of Kenya. Mumbi has received several awards for her efforts in human rights advocacy. In 2013, she was nominated and selected as a finalist for the Front Line Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk. In Autumn 2014, Mumbi participated in the human rights fellowship program at the

in the United Kingdom. In May 2015, her brother-in-law was murdered. She and her family campaigned for an investigation and the five police officers were ordered to be arrested. In 2017 her brother was shot dead on the road by a policeman. In May 2020, she received a death threat following her work with evicted residents of Kariobangi Sewage village. In August 2022, Mumbi ran for election, for a seat on the county assembly for Kiamaiko ward in Nairobi. She came sixth out of thirteen candidates.
