The ''TLS'', reviewing his second book, commended him for a 'seriousness of form and subject uncommon among his generation', and describes his work as 'subversive – and substantial.' His critical essays have appeared in ''Essays in Criticism'', ''English'', ''Poetry Review'', ''PN Review'', and elsewhere.
