Special churches
La Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur d'Alger (Sacred Heart Cathedral of Algiers) a concrete Modernist church, was built in 1956. It became a cathedral in 1962, replacing the French colonial Cathedral of St. Philip of Algiers when that 1612 building was reconverted to the Ketchaoua Mosque. The Cathedral of St. Philip of Algiers was established by converting the
Ketchaoua Mosque in 1845, but was reconverted to the Ketchaoua Mosque in 1962. There is also a Minor Basilica at the Basilique de
Notre Dame d'Afrique in Algiers.
