for six-years. There, he brought a sense of playfulness back to the organization with his signature refrain of "joy with justice." He continues to work with Slow Food International and serves on its Board of Directors. A longtime advocate for urban-rural linkages, he co-founded the voice for farmers markets in the USA, the Farmers Market Coalition; and the World Farmers Market Coalition together with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, and notable Italian farmers market network, Campagna Amica.


Career

In 2023, McCarthy was elected as President for the World Farmers Markets Coalition at its inaugural General Assembly in Rome. He serves with an international Board of Directors, and with a mandate granted from over 75 organizations spread in over 60 countries of the world. Together with Director General Carmelo Troccoli, he leads this vibrant yet young organization to grow a community of practice of farmers markets to benefit farmers, consumers, and communities that host these independent institutions. In 2022, McCarthy's book, Kuni: a Japanese Vision and Practice for Urban-Rural Reconnection, he cowrote with Niigata Prefecture rural leader Tsuyoshi Sekihara was published by North Atlantic Books.
