Juan Ponce de León founded the original Spanish settlement in Puerto Rico at Caparra (named after the province of
Cáceres, Spain, the birthplace of then-governor of Spain's Caribbean territories
Nicolás de Ovando), which today is known as Pueblo Viejo barrio.
