Polarization ellipse

At a fixed point in space (or for fixed z), the electric vector \mathbf traces out an ellipse in the x-y plane. The semi-major and semi-minor axes of the ellipse have lengths A and B, respectively, that are given by : A=, \mathbf, \sqrt and : B=, \mathbf, \sqrt, where \beta =\alpha_y-\alpha_x with the phases \alpha_x and \alpha_y. Parameterization

Any fixed polarization can be described in terms of the shape and orientation of the polarization ellipse, which is defined by two parameters: axial ratio AR and tilt angle \tau. The axial ratio is the ratio of the lengths of the major and minor axes of the ellipse, and is always greater than or equal to one. Alternatively, polarization can be represented as a point on the surface of the
