Gura was born in Ware, Massachusetts. A graduate of Phillips Academy (1968), he received his AB, '' magna cum laude'', in History and Literature in 1972 from

In 2019 the governor of North Carolina named him to the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, a state-wide honor. He plays the clawhammer banjo in a traditional Appalachian style, known as "old-time."
