2010 census

As of 2010, there were 3,695 households, out of which 32.7% were vacant. In 2000, 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.8% were married couples living together, 21.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.96. In 2000, the town population was spread out, with 27.0% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 85.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.3 males.
