The event was created to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park System and was designed to encourage amateur radio operators to transmit from within National Parks. POTA has been a popular method of community and student outreach, with events taking place in parks and sometimes during other public events. The organization has worked to spread to countries outside the United States including the Caribbean and India. Amateur radio operators who set up stations at a park are known as activators, and other amateur radio operators who complete contacts with them are called hunters.
