in 1996, based on its 1994 release of Netsite. The product was renamed Sun Java System Web Server, reflecting the product's acquisition by
Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Sun for short) was an American technology company that sold computers, computer components, software, and information technology services and created the Java programming language, the Solaris operating system, ZFS, t ...
, and then, when Oracle acquired Sun in 2010, to Oracle iPlanet Web Server. In January 2009, Sun open sourced core components of Sun Java System Web Server 7.0 under the

as Open Web Server. The open source version was kept in sync with commercial releases until January 2010 (7.0 update 8). Since Oracle's acquisition of Sun, there have been no further open source releases. In 2010, Oracle renamed the product from Sun Java System Web Server to Oracle iPlanet Web Server, although documentation and links are still in the process of being updated to reflect this.
