History

The village was first mentioned in 1349-1362 as Dragondeez, and means "house of Dragon (person)". Ottersum developed along the

in the Early Middle Ages. It used to be part of the

Ottersum was home to 200 people in 1840. In 1944 and 1945, the village was damaged by war. It was a separate municipality until 1973, when it was merged with Gennep.
